Steve had a storied career. He debuted back in 1977, and by the mid-’80s he was tearing up rings across the U.S. under the banners of the American Wrestling Association (AWA), National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and later even had runs in the big leagues.
He claimed the AWA Light Heavyweight Championship in 1984 and held onto it for a whopping 613 days.
In 1986, Regal defeated Denny Brown to win the NWA Junior Heavyweight title — a win that the organization now calls “paving a path for generations to come.”
And yes — “Mr. Electricity” didn’t just wrestle. He lit up arenas, reigned supreme in the junior-heavyweight division, and built a legacy in wrestling’s rugged golden age.
Here’s the gut-punch: Regal passed away back in July, yet the wrestling community only learned of it now. Even promoters were apparently trying to book him for conventions — not knowing he’d already gone. That’s how under-the-radar this was.
One fan on Reddit summed it up bluntly:
“RIP — underrated in-ring worker of the ’80s.”
Another wrote:
“But ‘Mr. Electricity’ Steve Regal has sadly passed.”
It’s heartbreaking and wild — such a name from wrestling’s past slipping away quietly.
