Steve “Mongo” McMichael, a cornerstone of the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears defense and a beloved figure in both football and wrestling, passed away on April 23, 2025, at the age of 67. His death followed a courageous battle with ALS, a diagnosis he made public in 2021.

Born in Houston, Texas, McMichael’s athletic prowess was evident early on. He excelled in multiple sports during high school and went on to play college football for the Texas Longhorns. Drafted by the New England Patriots in 1980, he found his true home with the Chicago Bears, where he became a two-time Pro Bowler and a key player in their Super Bowl XX victory. Known for his tenacity and resilience, McMichael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.

After retiring from football, McMichael transitioned to professional wrestling, joining WCW in 1995. He became a member of the iconic Four Horsemen stable and clinched the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship in 1997. His larger-than-life persona made him a fan favorite in the wrestling world.

In his later years, McMichael faced ALS with the same determination he showed on the field. Despite the disease’s progression, he remained a symbol of strength and was honored with the Les Turner ALS Courage Award in 2021. He passed away peacefully in hospice care, surrounded by his family.

Steve McMichael’s legacy transcends sports. He embodied the spirit of Chicago—gritty, passionate, and unyielding. His contributions to football and wrestling, as well as his bravery in the face of illness, will continue to inspire generations to come.
