Saturday night in Newark, New Jersey turned into a heartbreaking nightmare — gunfire erupted around 7 p.m. on Chancellor Avenue, and in the blink of an eye, two innocent lives were lost: a 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman.
Paramedics rushed them to University Hospital, but tragically, both were pronounced dead. The violence didn’t stop there: three more people were hit — an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man. Thankfully, they’re all in stable condition right now.
Eyewitnesses say it sounded like rapid, relentless gunfire, followed by screaming. Authorities arrived with a heavy presence, marking at least 17 evidence points at the scene.
Newark’s leadership didn’t mince words — Mayor Ras Baraka called it “a dark and devastating day.” Meanwhile, Governor Phil Murphy took to social media, urging folks to “pray for the victims and their families.”
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive? Still under investigation. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has vowed to dig in, and the community is reeling — this is violence with devastating consequences, especially when children are involved.
